Universal Orlando Resort is one of the most exciting vacation destinations in Florida, boasting two amazing theme parks , Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, along with the thrilling Volcano Bay water park. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned theme park enthusiast, there’s something for everyone. From world-class rides and immersive lands to delicious dining options, here's everything you need to know and my personal experience, for the best Universal Orlando visit.

We visited Universal Orlando in mid-January, taking advantage of cheaper tickets and fewer crowds. However, the colder weather meant that Volcano Bay was closed during our stay, which was disappointing as we had planned to visit twice. This left us with less to do in the last two days, although we still had fun.

Hotel Stay

We stayed at Loews Royal Pacific Resort, chosen for its seamless check-in and the included fast passes, which allowed us to skip long lines for most rides. The rooms were clean and family-friendly, with a separate sink from the shower and toilet. There are multiple restaurants throughout the lobby and 2nd floor areas. We ate at the resort twice. I would recommend eating at the City Walk for both quality and price. But I would just stay there for the amazing gym! Free water, full gym, multiple equipment options, multiple shower areas, and free toiletries out on the counters, It even had a steam room and sauna!

Costs

We spent seven days in total, with five full days at the park.

The first day we got there we used Instacart to order some groceries. The goal was to cover breakfast and snacks. We got some milk, bread, bagels, peanut butter, jam, chips, pop, water, cream cheese, alcohol, and a few other minor items. The price for this was $150 USD and they delivered it to the lobby. If you wanted to save even more money you can bring a sandwich maker and make all kinds of things and bring them for lunch. Keep in mind you will have to carry all of this throughout the parks. I tried to bring bagles one day, and they all got smushed.

Lunch and dinner at the park or CityWalk averaged $80-110 USD per meal for our family of four. This price does not include any alcoholic drinks or appetizers. (total was approximately $1000 USD). If you were to come back for lunch and make it at your hotel room, this would also be a great option to save money.

To stay at the Loews Royal Pacific Resort for 2 kids, 2 adults, park tickets to all 3 parks (Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios, Volcano Bay, and the Express passes, was $4100 USD.

Extras, such as souvenirs are obviously not included.

Fast Passes and Extras

The fast passes were worth it, significantly reducing wait times for rides. We also found the refillable cup and popcorn bucket to be good investments, despite their bulkiness. If you have little ones, The child swap feature on rides was very convenient for families.

Top Rides & Attractions at Universal Orlando

(I'm going to cover the ones you actually might care about, mind you I don't have infants with me)

Here’s a breakdown of the must-see attractions in each park, rated out of 10 for their thrills, immersion, and overall experience. The few we didn’t end up going on I took a survey from people and pretty much took an average from what they said.  Whether you’re a fan of high-speed roller coasters, 3D simulation rides, or water-based fun, these are the best of the best.

Universal Studios Florida

Hogwarts Express:

Hogwarts Express Orlando Florida

Rating: 9/10

Some people loved this, and it is a very cool concept and idea. I didn't get much out of it but my family and friends loved this. This train ride connects Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, offering different experiences in each direction. It's a magical journey for Harry Potter fans, with impressive attention to detail.

The Bourne Stuntacular

The Bourne Stuntacular Orlando Florida

Rating: 9/10

This was way better than I thought it would be. This is a show for all ages and I highly recommend you check it out. A live-action stunt show featuring impressive special effects and high-octane action scenes. It's a thrilling and technically impressive addition to Universal Studios.

Revenge of the Mummy

Revenge of the Mummy Orlando Florida

Rating: 9/10

This was one of our favourites!! We went on this ride 4 times in the 5 days we were there. This indoor roller coaster combines dark ride storytelling with high-speed thrills. It’s a perfect mix of twists, turns, and surprises, making it one of the park's under the radar amazing attractions.

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts Orlando Florida

Rating: 8/10

The entrance to this area and attraction has a dragon at the top that spits fire every 10 to 15 minutes, you can even feel the heat if you are close enough, very cool! I sported these bad boys that day. This ride itself is a 3D dark coaster that combines the thrills of a roller coaster with stunning 3D visuals from the Harry Potter movies. The immersive queue and dynamic ride elements make this a must-do if you are a wizarding world fan.

Transformers: The Ride – 3D

Transformers: The Ride Orlando Florida

Rating: 8/10

We did this one a few times. I enjoyed it and so did the kids. This does not have any high-speed roller coaster tracks for anyone who doesn't like coasters. It is A high-energy, 3D simulator that plunges you into an epic battle between Autobots and Decepticons. The action is non-stop and the visuals are nothing short of spectacular, I would recommend it at least once.

The Simpsons Ride

Rating: 6/10

I grew up with the Simpsons. I had to wear these that day. I thought this ride was just ok. If you are pressed for time you could skip it. It is a motion-simulator ride that places you in the wacky world of the Simpsons. it's not as intense as other attractions, so it might be better for smaller kids. But be warned it is very much an intense motion simulator.

Despicable Me Minion Mayhem

Rating: 6/10

This one is great for smaller kids. It is a family-friendly 3D simulator where you join the mischievous Minions. It’s a lighthearted experience that’s great for younger guests or those looking for a less intense ride.

Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon

Rating: 6/10

This is a heavy 3D motion simulator ride that takes you on a fun-filled race through New York City with Jimmy Fallon. It's entertaining, especially for fans of The Tonight Show. If you don't like 3D simulators much, this one might not be for you.

E.T. Adventure:

Rating: 5/10

If you are pressed for time, you can skip this one. If you have little ones, that are scared of rides, you may WANT to do this ride. You sit on a simulated bicycle through a dark ride where you help E.T. return to his home planet.

Fast & Furious – Supercharged

Rating: 4/10

This ride was ok. there are a few live people encounters and a simulated ride. This motion simulator ride features a high-speed chase with the Fast & Furious crew. While it has impressive special effects, our family had mixed reviews of it.

Islands of Adventure

The Incredible Hulk Coaster

Hulk Coaster Orlando Florida

Rating: 10/10

Sadly we did not do this one. but after speaking with some people after they they loved it. They said it was one of the most intense roller coasters in the world, the coaster sends riders soaring through loops, twists, and high-speed drops. The launch at the beginning is one of the most thrilling moments in the park. You even go under a bridge with water!

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure

Rating: 10/10

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure Orlando Florida

Note: We had to get there early, 1 hour before the park opened; which is included for people who are staying at a Universal Orlando Resort hotel guests and select annual pass holders can get Early Park Admission.

And it was one of our favourite rides. I would highly recommend it. I sported these yet again.

This ride offers an immersive experience with a mix of storytelling and roller coaster thrills. The unique motorbike and sidecar seats add to the excitement, making it a must-ride for Harry Potter fans.

VelociCoaster:

VelociCoaster Orlando Florida

Rating: 10/10

This one was also a no for us. This thing was amazing. It goes over the water and has some amazing boosts and turns. It is known for its intense speed and thrilling inversions, this Jurassic World-themed coaster is one of the most exhilarating rides at Universal Orlando. If you like high speed coasters, you have to go on this one. The wait for fast pass guests was not that bad, around 30-40 minutes. if you got there early it was 5-10 minutes.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey Orlando

Rating: 9/10

We did this one 4 times. The kids really enjoyed it and so did I. A groundbreaking ride that takes you through Hogwarts Castle and into the world of Harry Potter. Using a combination of motion simulation and real sets, it’s a jaw-dropping experience that truly feels magical. Tip: if you are on the far most LEFT facing the ride (to get on) you will get dragon breath in your face and if you look to your right at specific times you can see how your seat is really moving.

Jurassic Park River Adventure

Rating: 8/10

We did not do this one. It was closed for maintenance and also much too cold. It is a water ride and you will get wet, it takes you through the Jurassic Park islands before sending you down a terrifying drop to escape a T-Rex. The "Google" says the story and the theming are top-notch, and that you will get wet!

The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man

Rating: 7/10

We did this one 3 times. The kids loved this one. It is a 3D ride that blends motion simulation with physical movement, sending you on a high-speed chase alongside Spider-Man through the streets of New York. The combination of effects and storytelling made it really cool. My stomach moved a bit at specific moments the first time.

Doctor Doom’s Feafall

Rating: 7/10

We did not do this one. The people I interviewed loved it. Remember it only shoots you up, it doesn't lift you to the top and drop you. It shoots you 185 feet into the air.  I was told the initial launch is exhilarating, but the ride is pretty short.

Camp Jurassic

Rating: 7/10

This play area is perfect for kids.  My kids spent 2 separate hours here, they loved it.  The play area offers a variety of interactive elements like rope bridges, slides, caves with waterfalls, and water cannons. It's a great place for families to explore and have fun together, providing a break from the more intense rides.

Pteranodon Flyers

Rating: 6/10

Please keep in mind this attraction is typically “Closed”. It is a kid-friendly ride that lets guests soar through the air like a pteranodon. While it’s not as thrilling as other attractions, it’s a perfect choice for younger visitors or families looking for a calmer experience.

The Cat In The Hat

Rating: 6/10

A whimsical dark ride based on Dr. Seuss’s classic book.  It is a fun experience, but I found it may be a little much for some smaller kids.  There are a lot of characters moving towards you, some younger kids may get scared.

Volcano Bay

(note on this island, we couldn't go due to the temperature was too cold so it was not open)

Volcano Bay Orlando Florida

Krakatau Aqua Coaster

Krakatau Aqua Coaster Orlando

Rating: 9/10

I read and heard it is one of Volcano Bay’s ultimate thrill rides. It launches you and three others in a canoe straight through the heart of the towering volcano. With mist, water jets, and even glowing lava effects at night, it’s an adrenaline rush that feels just like a real roller coaster—only wetter! It looks intense but is pure fun, making it a must-ride attraction. I heard it looks amazing after dark.

Ko'okiri Body Plunge

Volcano Island Orlando

Rating: 8/10

You have to get all the way to the top and get in a chamber to go on this thing, crazy! The chamber's bottom drops out and sends you plummeting. This extreme body slide sends you plunging down a near-vertical drop from 125 feet. Be sure to plug your nose.

Kala and Tai Nui Serpentine Body Slides

Rating: 8/10

The Kala and Tai Nui Serpentine Body Slides at Volcano Bay are an absolute rush for thrill-seekers. After climbing over 200 steps inside the Krakatau volcano, you step into a transparent capsule, heart pounding as the trap door suddenly drops beneath you. The free-fall sends you twisting and turning through intertwining tubes, with the blue Kala slide offering an intense ride and the green Tai Nui slide cranking up the speed even more. Water rushes over your face as you accelerate, making for an exhilarating yet intense experience. It’s a must-ride for adrenaline junkies, but be ready—it’s not for the faint of heart!

TeAwa The Fearless River

Rating: 8/10

This redefines the lazy river experience. You have to wear a mandatory life vest, Once you plunge into this high-speed torrent, it will immediately sweep you away by powerful currents and surging waves. The river's swift pace and choppy waters provided an exhilarating journey, offering both thrill and relaxation. Navigating the rapids was a thrilling adventure, making it a standout attraction that I eagerly revisited multiple times during my visit.

Maku Puihi Round Raft Rides

Rating: 8/10

Maku features a series of high-speed turns and drops, while Puihi offers a zero-gravity drop and a dark, enclosed section. Both rides are thrilling and perfect for groups

Waturi Beach

Rating: 7/10

While not a ride, this beautiful beach area at Volcano Bay is perfect for relaxing and floating in the crystal-clear water. It’s a great spot to cool off between rides.

Rainforest Village

Rating: 7/10

A tranquil area filled with winding water slides and interactive water play areas. It’s ideal for families with younger children who want a fun but less intense water park experience.

Best Tips for Visiting Universal Orlando

- Use the Universal Orlando App: Download the official app for real-time wait times, showtimes, and mobile food ordering. It’s a lifesaver when navigating the parks and trying to maximize your day.

Consider Express Passes: Universal offers Express Passes that allow you to skip the regular lines for most attractions. If you want to minimize wait times, this can be a worthwhile investment.

Arrive Early: Get to the parks as early as possible to enjoy popular attractions before the crowds arrive. Many of the top rides will have shorter lines first thing in the morning.

Stay at a Universal Hotel: Staying on-site at one of Universal’s resorts can offer added perks like early park access, exclusive tours, and more. Plus, the theming at these hotels is second to none!

Food in the park is just ok. The Comic Strip Cafe was decent, but the Pizza Predattoria

was just awful! on Islands of Adventure. For Universal Studios I did not enjoy the "Moe's Tavern restaurant, although we did get the famous donut there.

The Simpsons Donut Universal Orlando

Final Thoughts

Overall, our Universal Orlando trip was packed with excitement, thrills, and a few surprises along the way. From the high-speed coasters to the immersive worlds of Harry Potter and Jurassic Park, there was never a dull moment. While the closure of Volcano Bay was disappointing, the rides we did experience—like the heart-pounding Revenge of the Mummy and cool shows like The Borne Stuntacular more than made up for it. Staying at Loews Royal Pacific Resort was a great choice, especially with the included Express Passes, which saved us hours of waiting. The food at CityWalk was a highlight, though costs added up quickly. For anyone planning a trip, I’d recommend going in the off-season for shorter lines and considering grocery delivery to save on meals.

One quick tip if you’re planning your trip: Driving in Orlando can actually be a fun and easy experience, but if you want to skip the traveling hassle, I recently discovered a private transportation company called Orlando Superior Transportation. They are cost-effective — plus they also offer awesome perks like a free grocery stop, a complimentary car seat, and all parking, tolls and taxes are already included. Definitely worth checking out if you want a stress-free ride!
